Our Story

The Senior Citizen Retreat Centre (SCRC) Ulu Yam is an initiative spearheaded by the Pertubuhan Pembangunan Kemasyarakatan Sikh Malaysia (PPKSM). This project began with the compassionate objective of providing appropriate accommodations for an elderly Sikh man, reflecting the organization's commitment to supporting the elder members of the Sikh community.

Origins and Conceptualization
The concept for the SCRC was originally outlined in 2019, spurred by the recognition of the need for specialized elderly care facilities within the Sikh community in Malaysia. The envisioned retreat aimed to offer not just a residence, but a nurturing environment where seniors could thrive both socially and spiritually.

Challenges and Delays
As plans for the SCRC were set into motion, the project encountered significant obstacles due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout 2020 and 2021, the development faced substantial delays caused by health concerns, restrictive lockdowns, and slowed administrative functions, which together hindered the project's advancement.

Progress Towards Realization
Despite these setbacks, the project has shown resilience, with efforts refocused on securing the necessary approvals and permits required to push forward. This critical phase ensures that the center will meet all required legal and safety regulations, crucial for a facility catering to senior citizens.

Strategic Location
Strategically located in Kampung Sungai Chik Ulu Yam, the SCRC is situated approximately 50 meters from the Gurdwara Sahib Baba Vir Singh. This close proximity to the Gurdwara facilitates easy access for residents to participate in spiritual and community activities, integral to maintaining their cultural and religious connections.

This initiative by PPKSM exemplifies a dedicated effort to integrate care with cultural sensitivity, aiming to set a standard for community-driven elderly care that could inspire similar projects elsewhere. The SCRC Ulu Yam, once completed, promises to be more than just a home; it will be a community hub where the elderly can live their later years with dignity and fulfillment.
